What is a security strike-plate reinforcement and why do I need one?

A strike-plate reinforcement is a steel strengthening of the door frame at the point where the lock's bolts engage. Older frames are often made of thin sheet metal (or wood), making them a very weak point – sometimes a single strong kick is all it takes to break through.

Why get an additional (upper) lock?

It's a separate, independent lock. A potential intruder has to defeat two locks instead of one, increasing noise and the time needed to enter. An additional locking point also makes the door more resistant to being forced or kicked in.
